I first discovered Shiro Cosmetics in late September 2014 on Instagram. Chloe Dykstra (model, actress, and cosplayer) posted a photo showing off her new bright tinted lip balm “Who Swallowed a Star”. Being a lip junkie (with literally a dozen tubes of lipcolor in my purse), I HAD to investigate and find out more about this business.
Shiro (Japanese for Castle) is a 100% vegan and cruelty-free independent cosmetics company out of Portland, Oregon and owned by Caitlin Johnstone. Their wide range of products are handmade in small batches every day with names inspired by all things geek. With over ten different eye shadow collections, lip glosses and balms, contour powder, blush, highlighters, bronzers, and finishing powders, there is TRULY a product for everyone. Plus, the prices are comparable to drugstore products BUT you can order samples to try before committing to the full-size products (and candy and free samples based on what you purchased are also shipped with your order!)
This post was originally supposed to be a product review but picking a single shadow or lip color was almost as hard as it was deciding whether to go as a gender-swapped Clark Kent or Peter Parker for Halloween (Clark Kent ultimately prevailed). All shadows glide right on and blend seamlessly, even with your fingertip. The lip balms and glosses last over four hours and rarely need touched up throughout the day. Facial products will be in my January order, no doubt, and I can’t wait to try them!
What started out as a fab find on Instagram has now evolved into customer loyalty. Shiro Cosmetics is truly the definition of geek chic. Whether you’re a diehard nerd, pro-vegan and cruelty-free products, or just looking to branch beyond the drugstore offerings, Shiro is definitely worth a look!
